6 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Sirimon – Chogoria Route

Leaves from Nairobi Kenya

The Sirimon route features the most gradual ascent profile and best acclimatization options..

This peak circuiting program offers some of the finest mountain trekking experience in East Africa!.

The vast bulk of the snow capped Mt. Kenya looms over the entire region of the central Kenya.

The mountain is part of the central highlands. It is the highest mountain in Kenya and in Africa after the Mt. Kilimanjaro.

For hikers, point Lenana at 4,895 m is the destination.

This is accessed from different routes depending on your availability of time, budget and hiking experience.

The view en-route, the physical exertion and the rough climbing experience combine to bring out a well-deserved sense of accomplishment to the climbers.

We undertake Mt. Kenya climbing expeditions on all routes.

Chogoria route

This is an awesome route to use when climbing Mount Kenya and a best option to use when descending the volcano, this route offers spectacular scenery including views of waterfalls and amazing gorge. Climbing Mount Kenya using Chogoria route takes 6 days including 3 days for descending.

6 Days Chogoria – Sirimon Route

Mt kenya trekking 6 days chogoria out sirimon route

Day 1: Nairobi- Mt Kenya Bandas (2,900m) 3hrs, 10km walk, 950m ascent.

Depart from Nairobi at 0800hrs, driving through agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we take 4×4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest for distance of 10 km up to the Mt Kenya Bandas. Dinner and overnight at the Mount Kenya Bandas.

Day 2: Mt Kenya Bandas – Lake Ellis Campsite

( 3,600m) 3hrs, 9km, 700m ascent.

After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.

Day 3: Lake Ellis- Minto`s Camp.

( 4,200m) 4 hrs, 12km, 600m ascent.

Similar early start. Again well off the beaten track to follow a ridge up the mountain.About 3 hours to eventually join the tourist track .That is on the normal Chogoria route. This is at an altitude of about 4,100m. Breath taking views over the Gorges Valley. Then back  towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing before continuing for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m .For  our night’s rest. Afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10 minute walk to the “Temple” is well worth the effort. This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge. They look as if they are praying.

Day 4: Minto`s – Austrian hut

4,700m(top hut) 4 hrs, 7km, 500m ascent.

Today we begin our trek ascending up along the foot of huge rock walls. From the top we`ll have an excellent view of Mt. Kenya. After ascending for a couple of hours you reach Tooth Col. From here you traverse until you reach the Austrian Hut. Dinner and overnight.
Leave at 5.00am for predawn attempt, climbing for 1 hour across bare rock and scree slopes characteristic of the alpine region up to Pt Lenana – the hiker`s summit, arriving in time to catch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton’s camp for breakfast and a short rest. After breakfast we begin a 5 hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp. Dinner and overnight at the Old Moses camp.

Day 6: Old Moses camp – Nairobi.

2 hrs, 9km, 680m descent.Old Moses camp – Nairobi. 2 hrs, 9km, 680m descent.

Africa safari experience

Africa, the second largest continent, covering about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth. Please note Africa is not a country its a continent with many countries.Kenya being one of them.

Africa safari experience

Africa is not just a place, it’s a feeling.Like Kevin Fraser once said ‘Africa is not just a place, it’s a feeling’. And that is exactly what it is. The beauty of the places and the people, as well as the difficulty experienced by those living there, make you feel both very grateful for what you have, and in a strange way also longing for more simplicity. Africa will make you feel more grounded, and connected to nature, the people, and yourself. It forces you to be in the moment because you don’t know what the next minute will bring. Being so close to nature makes you feel alive and free

Africa wildlife and the people

Immerse yourself in this ancient land, its people and the most astonishing wildlife on the planet. Get ready to be transformed. And enjoy the world with new eyes.

Amazing landscapes, stunning wildlife, Africa safaris, tropical beaches, vibrant cities, and a fascinating culture and people… the African continent has it all!

And what’s more, where most parts of the world have been visited by millions already, many parts of Africa are still unchartered territory. Think dust roads, internet-free zones, mud houses, traditional tribes, and miles of untamed nature. This makes the continent an adventurous place to travel to. At the same time, the national parks and lodges are completely up to date with delicious foods, comfortable beds, and WiFi.

An Africa safari, therefore, is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday! Kenya especially is heaven on earth for nature lovers. It has over fifty national parks, game reserves, and conservancies. In Kenya, you experience an amazing African safari and subsequently relax at the world’s most beautiful  white beaches of  Diani Beach. But also Tanzania has much to offer with the famous Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. And if your dream is to discover the mountains and gorillas of Uganda please keep checking this page, because we will offer it soon!

What can I expect from a safari in Africa?

A perfect safari day begins with a lovely early morning rise with African savannah sounds. After a strong, healthy breakfast, you head out in a safari vehicle with your personal driver. This is THE time to look for wildlife – since these early hours, and the last hours before sunset, are when animals are most active. You go on exploring the savannah until it’s time for lunch. Here you can opt to go back to the camp, or to have a picnic along the way. You go on exploring the wild until just before sunset, when you’ll stop for the famous safari sundowner. Watch the sunset while you nurse your favourite drink and reminisce the day. You arrive back in camp in time to freshen up. Then it’s dinner and off to bed early since around sunrise the next morning it all starts again.

What sort of hotel can I expect on a safari?

As a general rule you can say the higher your safari prices, the better your hotel. At the lower end, campsites are usually basic, sometimes crowded and not always in the best locations within the national parks or reserves. They are however well priced and often have ample facilities such as showers and toilets.

Lodges are the mainstays of the safari scene and the quality varies considerably – many lodges within the reserves and national parks have excellent locations but are ageing and in need of renovation, while others are luxurious and recently overhauled. In tented camps, including mobile camps, you’ll sleep in large, walk-in tents – they’re like lodge rooms in terms of size but with canvas for walls and floor. Canvas tents allow you to hear the sounds of the African night. Most lodge rooms and tents of this kind have comfortable (not camp) beds, sometimes a desk and usually a private bathroom; some even have an outdoor shower with no roof but walls that protect your modesty.

There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne — bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive.” -Karen Blixen

Mount Kenya climbing tours

Mount Kenya is one of the world’s famous big mountains. Mt Kenya is Africa’s second highest standing mountain and the highest of all Kenya Mountains.

At a height of 5199 meters above sea level. Climbing Mount Kenya climbing tours has three peaks, Batian 5,199m being the most difficult climbing peak, Nelion 5,188m second difficult climb and point Lenana 4,985m.

Other major summits on the mountain include Point Piggott 4,957m, Point Dutton 4,885 and Point John 4,883m.

From the Mt. Kenya’s three main peaks (Batian, Lenana and Nelion), only point Lenana can be reached by trekkers and the other two being only for technical climbers – Mount Kenya technical climbing routes. There are two climbing options to choose from –  the ascent to the peak ranges from an intermediate level trekking to the highly technical rock climbing experience.

Mount Kenya climbing tours main routes are: Naromoru route, Chogoria Route and Sirimon route.

The tallest in Kenya, and the second highest in Africa, Mount Kenya stands 5199m tall. There are several summits on Mount Kenya: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. Despite being a strato-volcano, the peak itself gets its rugged profile from previously being covered in ice. Today, there are 11 small glaciers still on the peak.

The area surrounding the peak make up Mt Kenya National Park, well known for its unique flora and fauna. From the lowland savannah and bamboo forests the flora changes as you rise in elevation. Here you will find the unique high-altitude equatorial environment. The landscape seems as if it belongs on another planet with strange plants and misty terrain.

The approach to Mount Kenya from Nairobi involves a journey of about four hours to either the town of Naro Moru or Embu, where we can provide accommodation in a local hotel or our Guest House. Naro Moru is the base for ascents on the Sirimon, Burguret and Naro Moru routes and Embu is used for the Chogoria route. All our advertised prices are based on camping on the mountain but there are also huts on the Sirimon, Naro Moru and Chogoria routes which you can upgrade to.

Mount Kenya climbing Routes

Mount Kenya climbing tours: Naro Moru Route

This particular trek ascends the Noro Moru Route from the west and is our most popular option for the ascent. It includes the notorious ‘Vertical Bog’ which ascends for an hour or so above the Met Camp and takes the hiker into the Teleki Valley and up to Mackinders Camp. From here, an acclimatisation day follows and then an early start to the summit, initially over easy paths to the head of the valley and then up a steep zigzag route on loose ground to reach the Austrian Hut at the base of the Lewis Glacier which has now retreated significantly over the past twenty years.

Aside from the stunning beauty, this route has the added challenge of a Via Ferrata. Feel the airy exposure of scrambling the side of the summit ridge from the Austrian Hut, the fixed lines help to provide a bit of extra confidence however the Naro Moru approach to the summit is definitely an adrenaline rush for those looking to experience the exposure of rugged peaks. From the summit our most popular descent is the stunning Chogoria route but cheaper and faster descents can be made down the Sirimon route or back down the Naro Moru route.

Mount Kenya Chogoria Route

Like the Noro Moru Route, the Chogoria Route of Mt Kenya does not require any technical climbing skills. Arguably this most beautiful of the trekking routes, it is also the longer option and our most popular option for the descent, however you can ascend the Chogoria route too. This route starts and ends at Embu and requires 4×4 transport to reach the starting point. It is also a trekking route that summits Point Lenana taking you through the Gorges Valley and the Lewis Glacier. There are lakes and tarns to explore along this route, although not the same infrastructure that you get on the Naro Moru and Sirimon routes, any climb on the Chogoria side will be a camping trip.

Mount Kenya Sirimon Route

Sirimon is another walking route that reaches Point Lenana, this route is the easiest of the three trekking routes to Point Lenana. Also starting from Naro Moru, the route takes five days and the diverse scenery and enjoyable hiking make this route the perfect choice if accompanied with a descent down the other side on the Chogoria route.

Combination Routes, Traverses & Summit Circuits on Mount Kenya

We have several different combination routes for trekking to Point Lenana, allowing you to go up one route and down another. Almost all are camping routes, but some have mountain huts that you can upgrade to. Our Mount Kenya Traverse ascends the Naro Moru and descends via the Chogoria route over 5 or 6 days and would be our recommendation as it combines spectacular beauty with airy and challenging trekking and good acclimatisation. The Summit Circuit is a bit longer at seven days and explores the nooks and crannies of the mountain, circling the summit massif and camping high throughout. It includes going on a hunt for “Icy Mike” a very lost elephant!!

Technical Climbs up Mount Kenya Batian Peak

If you are a proficient  climber, you will love the challenge of Batian Peak, the true summit of Mount Kenya (5,199m). Previous technical rock climbing experience is required for this 21-pitch climb. All 21 pitches are done in one day, making this Mt Kenya summit not only a beautiful climb, but an exhausting one as well. This peak is best attempted in June through August.

Technical Climbs up Mount Kenya Nelion Peak

The second tallest peak on Mt Kenya demands 18 pitches of trad rock climbing. Like its neighbor, plenty of technical rock climbing experience is required prior to climbing this demanding point. It is possible, if the weather and snow pack permits, to climb both Nelion and Batian Peak in the same day if you are a well-experienced fit climber, but this involves traversing between the two. There is in fact a small bivi hut right on the summit of Nelion which can take two people who get weathered out or have run out of time. Prime times for climbing Nelion are September through to March.

Best Times to Trek Mount Kenya

Best times for climbing Mount Kenya from any of the trekking routes are January to March and June to October but it can be climbed year-round. The rainy seasons typically occur in April, May and November. However, with the onset of climate change they have been difficult to predict in recent years.

Fitness Level Required to Climb Mount Kenya

For the trekking routes up to Point Lenana, you do not need to be an ultra-fit mountaineer. However, you should have some previous hiking experience over hilly terrain and a good overall fitness. For Nelion or Batian Peak you will need to be in excellent climbing shape. Multi-pitch climbs involve a lot of stamina and strength. Not just in your ability to climb, but walk as well. The technical climbing routes require you to summit Point Lenana as well, so be prepared to both trek and endure a multi-pitch climb.

Whichever route you choose, Adventure Alternative promotes proper acclimatization. We build extra days and hikes into our itineraries to ensure that you do not ascend too quickly and you are properly acclimatized.

Cultural Importance of Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya holds deep cultural value in the eyes of the Kenyan people. Local tribes have use this peak as a meeting place and it is seen as a throne of the gods. This mountain gave the country of Kenya its name and it holds a special place in the heart of all Kenyans.

Gear and Kit Required to Climb Mount Kenya

Aside from personal articles, having the right layering and clothing is key for climbing Mount Kenya. Having a few moisture-wicking, non-cotton layers are essential. Furthermore, you will want an insulating layer like a puffy jacket, hat and gloves for higher elevations. Mount Kenya does get rain and snow, so a waterproof layer and gaiters are useful for keeping the wind and rain at bay.

If you are climbing Nelion or Batian peaks, you are responsible for bringing your own trad racks, ropes, harness, helmet, cams and anchoring systems.

For a more comprehensive list of gear see our trekking kit list for Mount Kenya.

Need to know more? We’re here to help. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have regarding your trip to Mount Kenya.

Kenya big five safari

Kenya is one of the best places in Africa for ticking off the Big Five: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. Its  one of the best destinations on African continent for the BIG FIVE SAFARIS. The famous big five is usually the highlight of African wildlife safari

Kenya big five safari

An excellent short safari combination tour for Kenya for those hoping to see all these .Charismatic creatures would be Masai Mara  and Lake Nakuru (for black and white rhino).

Other top safari destinations

Destinations that host all or most Kenya Big Five safaris in Kenya include:

Tsavo East and Tsavo West

Amboseli, Laikipia Plateau,

Samburu-Buffalo Springs-Shaba,

Meru,

and to a lesser extent Shimba Hills.

In the north of Kenya, most notably Lake Nakuru, Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the Lewa Wilderness Conservancy, rhino can still be seen.Allowing you to see all of the Big Five.

The Big Five

This is a term that is used to refer to the 5 African animals. That early big game hunters considered most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt .This was on foot in Africa. These animals include the African elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros. Today hunting of the BIG FIVE is forbidden. Fortunately, it’s tourists who do most of the shooting. But only with their cameras. However, the effects of hunting/poaching are still visible in Kenya .As it resulted into reduction of the population of the Big five.

ELEPHANTS

Thy are largest land animal in the world. Some of the adults can reach up to 3 meters in height. The adult males, bull elephants, are usually solitary creatures. While females are generally found in groups led by a matriarch surrounded by younger females and their offspring. Although they are referred by many as gentle giants, elephants can be very dangerous .They  have been known to charge at vehicles, humans and other animals when they feel threatened. Elephants are commonly spotted on a Kenya safari in Amboseli National Park,  Masai Mara Samburu National Park, Tsavo National park and among many other areas.

It’s important to note Kenya’s ongoing conservation efforts to protect some of its greater and lesser species – one of which is the elephant population.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organizations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.

David Sheldrick wildlife trust

Founded in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick D.B.E, in honor of the memory of her late husband, famous naturalist and founding Warden of Tsavo East National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, the DSWT claims a rich and deeply rooted family history in wildlife and conservation. The DSWT has remained true to its principles and ideals, remaining a sustainable and flexible organization.

LION

The lion is often called the king of the jungle because it is the fiercest and largest predator on land. Lion’s natural prey includes zebras, impalas, giraffes and other herbivores especially the wildebeest. Lions tend to group themselves in pride of 12. Males are easily distinguished from females with their shaggy manes and are generally much larger.

The females, however, do most of the hunting. Although they have been known to attack humans, lions are generally calm animals that do not usually seem threatened by close proximity to people. On a safari to Kenya a tourist can  spot the big five mammals and  these are mostly found in Tsavo national park, Amboseli national park, Maasai Mara National Reserve, Samburu National Reserve and among others.

LEOPARD

Unlike the lions, leopards are almost always found alone. They are the most elusive of the big five since they mostly hunt during the night.

The best time to find them is very early in the morning during the game drives in the various national parks and national reserves.

This parks are like  Maasai Mara National reserve, Samburu National Reserve and among others, on a safari in Kenya or at night.

During the day you need to look carefully for these animals who usually can be found partially camouflaged in the undergrowth or behind a tree.

Generally, the male leopards are larger and heavier than the females, and the leopards are known as the smallest animal species in the big five mammals.

BUFALLO

Buffalo is perhaps the most dangerous to humans among the big five. Thy are very protective and territorial and when threatened they are known to charge with astonishing speed.Mostly found in groups and large herds. They spend most of their times grazing  in the savanna and floodplains. When approached the dominant bulls will tend to take an aggressive vigilant stand while the other adults gather around the calves to protect them.

The buffaloes are  great swimmers and they are known to kill the lions. Large numbers of buffaloes  in Kenya are sighted at the Lewa Wildlife conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve and among many other places. While in Kenya on a safari do not miss outs this amazing nature travel.

RHINO

Rhinoceros are an endangered species. Even seeing one at a distance is a rare treat. There are two types of rhinos: the black and white rhinos. The white rhino gets its name not from its colour which is really more yellowish grey but from the Dutch word “weid” which means wide.

This is in reference to the animal’s broad, wide mouth. With its square jaw and wide lips, they are able to graze. The black rhino, on the other hand, has a more pointed mouth which it uses to eat leaves from trees and bushes.

White rhinos are much larger than the black rhinos and more common. do not miss out a safari with Delight Rose Safaris to spot yourself the most amazing big five animal species in the different national parks and reserves in Kenya especially like Nairobi National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, Ol Pejeta national conserve, Meru national park  to spot the rhinos and many others.

Where to see rhino in Kenya:

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The region is a beacon of sustainability and holds East Africa’s largest black rhino population. The conservancy prides itself in safeguarding the critically endangered species, alongside other vulnerable species.

Both black and white rhino reside within Ol Pejeta Conservancy, as well as a number of other endangered species.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Housing over 165 critically endangered black rhino and 44 southern white rhino, Ol Pejeta Conservancy also provides sanctuary for Najin and Fatu, the two last remaining northern white rhino on the planet. However, neither of them can reproduce due to their age. In August 2019 a pioneering egg harvesting procedure was carried out in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, fuelling hope for the survival of the species. Although already classified as “functionally extinct”, the future of this sub-species is now dependent on the development of in vitro fertilisation techniques.

“One of the best places in all of Africa to see rhino” – Ol Pejeta
