]]>Upon arrival at the Nairobi airport, you will be transferred to the Nairobi serena (or similar) to rest for the next day’s departure.
Our tour guide will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel lobby at 0700 hrs. Depart for the dramatic semi-arid scrub land of the Northern Frontier. Arrival in Samburu will be by lunch time. After lunch embark on a game drive to sight resident wildlife species like the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx and the Blue-necked Somali Ostrich that are rare elsewhere in the country. The highlights of Samburu game reserve is the spectacular scenic beauty, rivers and forests. It is an area where the local people have a rich and colourful heritage. The reserves have numerous permanent springs and a wealth of wildlife which includes leopard, hippo, elephant, lion, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and crocodile in the Ewaso Nyiro River. Over 365 species of birds have been identified in the sanctuaries.
Breakfast then view the game as we exit the park and drive to Ol Pejeta conservancy. Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in all East Africa.
After lunch, embark on your first game drive in search of the “Big 5”—lion, leopard, Elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo. After lunch enjoy a game drive in the conservancy. Including a stopover at the Sweetwaters Chimp Sanctuary Sweetwater’s is the only sanctuary for rehabilitation in Kenya of these widely abused chimpanzees with two groups living in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. Breakfast at the camp then depart the lodge for Lake Nakuru National park arriving in good time for lunch at a Lodge. Lake Nakuru has also earned a reputation as an important haven for endangered species- particularly the Rothschild Giraffe and the black and white rhino. Departing early, guests will have the opportunity to observe, photograph and video more animal sightings along the way to the Maasai Village. Our local Kenya guides will communicate over the radio for the best sightings of lions, leopards, cheetahs and more! At the village, the Maasai Tribe will show us their traditional dances, songs and give a tour of their huts. On the way back to the lodge, we will have the opportunity for more wildlife sightings. Have your cameras ready as we depart for sunrise game viewing! Guests may have opportunities to see predators on the hunt or massive herds of wildebeest moving across the beautiful landscapes. Lake Nakuru National park covers 180 sq km and is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. We shall drive through the floor of the Great Rift Valley from Nairobi, while stopping on the way for curios and to admire and marvel at the breathtaking views of the escarpment along the way. We arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in time for a mid-morning game drive. Have picnic lunch at leisure. As we find our way out of the park; we have another game drive and embark on our way to Nairobi.

]]>The Chogoria route is our recommended and arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. It is the driest route up the mountain and the walk beside the Gorges valley truly spectacular. The descent by the Sirimon route takes one through some beautiful forest tracks and completes the traverse of the mountain. Accommodation on this hike is 2 nights in mountain huts and 2 nights camping, or if you prefer, all nights camping on the mountain.
Depart from Nairobi at 0800hrs, driving through agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we take 4×4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10 km to the Mt Kenya Bandas. Dinner and overnight at the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas.
After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace . A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.
Similar early start. Again well off the beaten track to follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours to eventually join the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. Breath taking views over the Gorges Valley and back over towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, before continuing for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and our night’s rest. Afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10 minute walk to the “Temple” is well worth the effort. This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying. An early night is recommended as you are attempting the summit next day.
Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs and you hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton camp for breakfast. After breakfast, begin a 5 hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp. Dinner and overnight at Old Moses camp.
After early morning breakfast, descend for 3 hours to the Sirimon Park gate to catch a vehicle for transfer to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
Transport from Nairobi, to as high as possible on the mountain and return to Nairobi.
All gear and equipment; i.e. Helmet and harness, 2 x 9mm ropes, we use double rope system, Slings, karabinas and other protection devices. First and last night accommodation in Nairobi, Tips to porters and guide, Foot wear and sleeping bag.

]]>August-December: South-East Face Route. Technical Climbing on Mt. Kenya via the Chogoria approach
Pick up from your hotel at about 08:00am and drive to Chogoria, about 4 hrs from Nairobi where we collect the porters and guides (as required). Proceed Into the Mount Kenya forest for the 22 km drive to the park gate altitude of 2,850m. Dependent on road conditions, these 22 km have been known to take all afternoon to do and in really wet conditions it is possible that the top four or five km may be impassable!. Night, dependent on clients wishes, at the Meru Mt. Kenya Banda’s or at road head, a further 7 km from the park gate.
After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace. A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithunguni and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near roadhead, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch by the stream banks then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.
From our campsite, we continue to move up through the moorland zone. As this area of the mountain is still off the beaten track, there are no paths to follow, and on each trip we vary the area we walk across. After about an hour, traverse left and join a ridge (slight path to follow) and join the normal Chogoria route to Minto’s Hut after about 4 hour walking. Lunch at a small stream crossing then 45 min on to a camp near Minto’s Hut and next to one of the tarns. Very short afternoon walk over to superb views across to “The Temple” and down to Lake Michaelson.
An early morning departure for the 2½ hour walk to Austrian Hut. Starts gently up the valley for about 2 km. It’s then hard left and steeple up for about 45 min (on scree slopes) to Upper Simba Tarn. Another short scree slope leads to the to ridge, right of “The Tooth” before dropping down the other side for about 50m and then contouring across to the Austrian Hut. Leave the hut before noon and cross the Lewis Glacier to the large boulder and scree slope leading to the start of the climb. Arrive Howell Hut on the summit of Nelion before 17:00pm.
Up early again, then (weather permitting), across Batian and back to Nelion before heading off down the climb to arrive at Austrian Hut by 13:00pm, Minto’s by 15:00pm, and road head before 18:00pm. Night at roadhead or Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas.
After breakfast return to Nairobi and be dropped at your hotel within the city.
Transport from Nairobi, to as high as possible on the mountain and return to Nairobi.

Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas. Dinner and overnight at the camp. Similar early start. Again well off the beaten track to follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours to eventually join the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. Breath taking views over the Gorges Valley and back over towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, before continuing for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and our night’s rest. Afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10 minute walk to the “Temple” is well worth the effort. This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying. Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs and you hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton camp for breakfast. After breakfast, begin a 5 hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp. Dinner and overnight at Old Moses camp. Meal plan (B, L, D)
Day 05: Old Moses camp – Nairobi- 2 hrs.
After early morning breakfast, descend for 3 hours to the Sirimon Park gate our driver will be ready to drive you to Lake Nakuru through Thompsons fall where you will have your lunch arriving at sarova lion hill late afternoon. After breakfast drive to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, the northern part of the Serengeti – Mara ecosystem and one of Kenya’s most favored game-viewing areas. Lunch at the camp or lodge followed by afternoon game viewing drives.
The Mara is 700 sq miles of open grassland dotted with the distinctive flat-topped acacia trees. It is watered by the tree-lined Mara River and its tributary the Talek River. Full day game drive. Picnic lunch will be served. The Mara is the land of African legend; Lion are abundant throughout the park, as are the elephants, giraffes, and a various gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopards are also regularly seen and, less commonly, rhino. The annual wildebeest migration, one of nature’s few remaining wildlife spectacles, occurs in the Mara from July to October when the big animals and their predators are to be present in abundance during. Several species of Bee-Eater, the flying rainbow that heads the list of the Mara’s hundreds of bird species.
Optional visit to Masai Village for a cultural tour can be arranged – $20 per person. Also optional hot air balloon ride can be arranged this morning, then proceed with your game drive.
As well as wildlife, the Maasai Mara is also home to many members of the colorful Maasai tribes people who may be seen around the borders of the park – Morans (warriors) loping across the plains, young boys herding goats, or elders grouped under a tree discussing matters of the day. Day 08: Masai Mara – Lake Naivasha.
Morning game drive at Masai Mara. After breakfast drive lake Naivasha, with at Naivasha sopa resort. All meals and overnight at lake Naivasha Sopa resort
Afternoon you can take a walk along the lake or relax along the lake

After breakfast depart for Tsavo West with game viewing enroute, arriving Tsavo in time for lunch. Afternoon game viewing takes you to Mzima Springs which is a fresh water source and a favorite haunt for Hippos and Crocodiles. Climbing Chaimu Crater gives stunning views from either side of the dense vegetation of the park. Animals seen in the park include Zebras, Leopards, Lions, and Elephants that tend to hide in the thickets. The birds include the eagles, buzzards, falcons and red-beaked Hornbills. Day 07: Tsavo West – Nairobi.
Early morning breakfast game drive with a visit to Mzima springs – the most iconic attraction in this park. The crystal-clear water of this chain of lakes is filtered through the volcanic rocks of the Chyulu Hills just to the north. Shaded by majestic fig and acacia trees, the lakes swarm with fish, large crocodiles and some big pods of hippos. You can leave your vehicle and follow a pretty nature trail – though you need to keep an eye out for large animals, especially early in the morning or before dusk. If you’re lucky, the underwater viewing chamber, accessed by a pier, can provide unique photo opportunities – of a sinuous, gliding crocodile, or the delicate, tiptoe, swimming-walking style of a hippo. After breakfast depart Tsavo West for drive back to Nairobi Meals plan. {B}
